Current Projects

South African College for Tourism (SACT)
Founded by the late Dr Anton Rupert, SACT is an NPO that trains unemployed rural youth in hospitality, wildlife tracking and eco-herding to equip them to take up skilled positions in the nature-based tourism industry. After a year of accredited training, graduates can return to their communities as entrepreneurs or work as part of the local eco-tourism industry within or around conservation areas. 66% of its alumni have been successfully placed in jobs over the last 20 years. Peiser Connections has had the privilege of assisting SACT with securing donations for this incredible initiative.

Daily Maverick
Daily Maverick (DM) is a well-known national online news publication that has led to some of the biggest investigations that have shaped the course of South African politics. Peiser Connections has assisted the DM for the past eight years with securing funding for investigative journalism and initiated the partnership with ABSA Bank to establish “Our Burning Planet” which is now the largest climate investigative and reporting unit on the continent. We are currently working on start-up funding for a metro expansion project which will hopefully see local news bureaus established in major metros.

Various Projects in SA

Tiger Kloof Education School – Vryburg, North West Province
Sue was involved in the restoration of the school where Bishop Desmond Tutus’ mother was educated. Built on a railway line between Kimberley and Vryburg, the apartheid government considered the school too successful and had it demolished. Sue joined the visionary headmaster, David Matthews, and together they fundraised to restore the buildings, which comprised of a school and a teachers’ training college. They also successfully lodged a land claim to reclaim land sold to neighbouring farmers.

Dominican Convent Schools and Kgosi Neighbourhood Foundation – Jeppestown, Johannesburg, Gauteng
When Sue noticed children between the ages of 3 and 5 years sitting idly on the pavement while their parents were at work, and others were locked in their houses to keep them safe, a decision was made to establish an Early Child Development Centre (ECD) for the children – and Kgosi Neighbourhood Foundation was formed. So began Sue’s deeply felt passion for early childhood development.

The Valley Trust – Valley of 1000 Hills, KwaZulu Natal
This visionary NPO pioneered primary health care with its signature vegetable gardens, teaching rural communities how to grow nutritious food. Primary health care workers were taught how to look after TB patients and later played a powerful role in educating communities at the epicentre of the aids pandemic. The Valley Trust was one of the first recipients of a funding grant from USAID in South Africa. Sue raised funding for community health care workers and innovative HIV aids programmes as well as an endowment fund.

Witkoppen Clinic – Johannesburg, Gauteng
The clinic provides quality health, social and welfare services to a population of over 1.3 million from the informal township of Diepsloot and the Thabo Mbeki squatter camp in Gauteng. Sue assisted the clinic in securing partners and funders for its tuberculosis and HIV programames.  She also setup a fundraising dinner and auction at the Goodman Gallery.  A highlight was Justice Edwin Cameron and  William Kentridge in conversation and very good wine. The event raised more than R3.5million, and enabled Witkoppen to canvas guests and to start a direct debit programme.

Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust

Cape Town, Western Cape
Sue acted as the lead Johannesburg based fundraiser for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust. While on holiday, Sue saw a sign at a bus stop in the Transkei with arrows pointing in the direction of the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. She used this tiny detail to convince executives in the mining board rooms of Johannesburg to take on an expansion building project for the hospital used by their laborers.

African Academy of Computer Assisted Design and Draughting

Boksburg, Gauteng
One of Sue’s career highlights was setting up a visit with the Japanese Government to bring the then President of Japan, President Mori, to visit the African Academy campus. This resulted in the Japanese government funding the purchase of computers, software and other ICT equipment.

Khanyisa Education Centre

Giyani, Limpopo
Founded in 1989, and built from scratch, the centre offers quality education in its independent primary and secondary schools. Sue recalls standing on the vacant land with a set of plans in her hand, thinking that it would be great to have a school there. Today, the 40-hectare campus accommodates 600 pupils.
